Chef Besh

In my prior job, I spoke to a ton of celebs, over the phone. They didn’t/don’t have the slightest clue who I am, but I had a great time recording sound clips from them and booking (phone/radio) interviews for them. One of them that I worked with several times was Chef John Besh from New Orleans who did work for Zatarain’s.

I knew he had several restaurants in NOLA and I finally had the opportunity to check one out. After going on his website I found the most convenient one to visit – Lüke. It’s a ‘homage to the grand old Franco-German brasseries that once reigned in New Orleans.’ Great décor and feel as soon as you walk in and I still want to know why over the door there are three clocks that read the same time that only twice a day would be right (the time they have is now escaping me).

The menu was so mouthwatering that it was tough to pick. As the lactose intolerant one, I had some restrictions, but the waiter was extremely helpful. When all was said and done, I opted for a salad and appetizer.

For the salad it was the Roasted Beets, which were yellow ones…huge and round, thinly sliced, served underneath a huge pile of delicious mixed greens and roasted pistachios with an amazing vinaigrette! It usually has blue cheese but I opted to nix that.

The appetizer I chose was the Tartine of Local Yellow Fin Tuna Nicoise. Sort of like a Nicoise salad but served on some perfectly toasted bread with aioli. Ok, I don’t really like aioli, but wow!

Normally I would pair wine with this dinner but had to check out the local brew. I tried the Lüke Alt, Covington, altbier. Nice, smooth, between a pale and red. Next I tried the Hopitoulas, New Orleans, IPA. Nice! Just enough hops to make a great IPA.

 

So, next time you’re in New Orleans, if you need a place to dine, check Lüke out. It’s worth it.

Zentan

Was treated to a very nice lunch the other day at an Asian restaurant near Thomas Circle in DC.  The venue, Zentan.  Per their own description, they are a modern Asian restaurant featuring award-winning cuisine, focusing on Japanese-inspired small and shareable plates.

The restaurant is very ‘sharp’ — that’s the best way I can think to describe it.  Lunch was at 1 on a Thursday, so it wasn’t packed but busy enough.  Nice decor, cool tables, overall good atmosphere.  We get the menu.  What to order?  Too many choices!  (sorry for the shadow on the picture, odd light in the restaurant)

I finally opted for the Rainbow Don Bento Box — tuna, salmon and whitefish sashimi, cooked shrimp sashimi (I can’t quite get why it’s sashimi if it’s cooked), sushi rice and seaweed salad.

I don’t really like seaweed and this salad was a knockout!  Wow, so good.  The whitefish was unreal.  The waiter said what it was and I can’t totally remember the Asian name he mentioned.  Melt in your mouth.  Absolutely amazing lunch.  Will totally have to check this place out for dinner, too.  Add it to your list if you’re looking for a new restaurant to try in DC.

Brasserie Beck

I was very fortunate this week to be able to return to a restaurant I visited several years ago, though this time it was just for a basic corporate lunch.  It was nonetheless just as amazing.  The location, Brasserie Beck in Washington, DC.  It’s a “contemporary European style brasserie” with a basic yet widespread menu.  Both times I’ve been there they have made amazing accommodations for dietary restrictions (lactose intolerance).  The first time the chef wanted to make something totally new as a challenge.

They are well known for their beer selection, boasting 9 Belgium drafts and over 100 Belgium bottles.  Darn, why was I there on a business lunch this past time?

For my meal I enjoyed an amazing Diver Scallops Salad — Avocado, Citrus, Shaved Fennel and Rocket Salad.  This is where they used oil to pan sear the scallops vs. butter.

My colleagues each enjoyed the Grilled Hanger Steak Salad — Mixed Greens, Charred Scallions, Warm Fingerling Potato Salad, Blue Cheese.

None of us had a bite of food left on our plates.  Would recommend checking this place out for lunch, dinner or just a nice happy hour.

From Spanish to Asian

There was a stat a few years ago that Bethesda has the most restaurants per capita in the country.  Not surprising.  And, as mentioned on a recent post, new places are opening all the time.  What can also be great about living right here is that these new restaurants send you coupons for FREE food.  Ahh, that lovely, rarely heard word.  Love it.  So, recently, another new place that opened its doors is Shophouse.  Ever heard of a place called Chipotle?  Yeah, thought so.  Owned by the same people, Shophouse just took inspiration from another continent.  So, the Asian flair is coming into play now and it’s pretty cool.  You (only) get a bowl (as in no burritos, my friends), pick your rice, meats, veggies, sauces, toppings, check out, eat.  They also note that the entire menu is dairy free and gluten free.

To start, you get brown or  jasmine rice, noodles or salad.

Then you pick meat — grilled chicken satay, grilled steak laab, chicken & pork meatballs or tofu.

Next veggies — broccoli, charred corn, eggplant and thai basil or green beans.

Then sauces — tamarind vinaigrette, green curry, spicy red curry.

To be followed by garnishes — green papaya slaw, pickles, herb salad.

And rounded out by toppings — toasted rice, crispy garlic, crushed peanuts, thai chilis.

You can get samples of everything so it’s a great way to get a taste of things.  They have fires/flames next to options that indicate levels of heat.  As in the green beans, hello!  You can also divide ingredients, as in get half/half.  So, say get corn and broccoli.  But, you can’t go three ways without paying extra.

I opted for a brown rice and lettuce with grilled chicken satay.  Then topped it with broccoli, corn and eggplant (yes, went extra), papaya slaw and herb salad and peanuts.  Then handed them my nice FREE coupon so the price was great (got the 3rd veggie for free because it was my first time there, so nice!). The regular cost for the chicken bowl was about $6.80, and it was huge.  I easily got 2 meals out of it.  So, another place to check out if you want to add to your list.

Spanish Food, Good Taste, Nice Price

There always seem to be new places opening in this area and it’s fun to actually check them out.  There is this new one in Bethesda, MD (part of a franchise) who’s name is tough to figure out based on the font but after discussion, wine, food, more wine and deep thoughts, we find out the official name is 100 Montaditos.  And what is this place?  Deep research tells you “100 Montaditos was founded in 2000, near the Spanish southern city of Huelva. Recreating the atmosphere of a traditional 19th century Spanish tavern, the restaurant specialized in montaditos, crunchy Spanish rolls baked to order and jam-packed with traditional ingredients as Serrano ham, Spanish tortilla, chorizo sausage and Manchego cheese.”

They have a huge menu of bite size food (basically little sandwiches) with great meats and cheeses.  They are all about $1-$3!  They also have some options for salad and meat plates.  My friend and I split a Spanish Gourmet platter of Serrano, Chorizo, Salami, Manchego, arugula and great bread.  It was $9 for more than enough goods.

For wines, she had some nice white for $4/glass.  I started with sangria — there are several options of basically wine and soda.  They are $3!  After that I opted for (straight) red wine for a whopping $4/glass.  Very nice house selections.

IMG_2533We sat at the bar so had service right there.  Otherwise you walk in, order at the counter, get a number, then they deliver your food to your table.  But a waiter continues to come to your table to see if you need anything.  Nice casual place.  Affordable, tasty, can be quick, or you can stay awhile.

Holiday Lunch

Today called for a holiday lunch, which also meant I got to check out a new (to me) location in DC.  Had a nice 3-course meal at Decanter at St. Regis with some colleagues.

We started with delicious focaccia and a mesclun salad.  Under all the lettuce was an amazing tapenade.  Heaven for olive lovers!

For the main course I opted for the scallops.  Pan seared with both a chickpea puree (can we say hummus?) and chickpeas, along with great seasoning.  Very nice portion size, too!

Though white would have paired a bit better with the scallops, I went for some Malbec.  The waiter said this stuff was great and I couldn’t turn it down.  The rest of the table was drinking beer or white so I had to take one for the (red) team.  I enjoyed some Siete Fincas from Argentina.  Medium body, smooth, fruity.

The other food options were a steak or pasta.  They were both inhaled/enjoyed quite a bit.

The meal closed with a nice dessert of 3 sorbets — lemon, raspberry, lime, with a little meringue on top.  Perfect ending.

I would be interested in checking this place out for dinner, as well.  Delicious food, excellent service, nice atmosphere.  Might just add it to my list.

 

 

 

 

DC Brunch Spot

Last Sunday the weather was bad but that was no reason to avoid heading out for brunch.  It had been planned and was going to happen.  There is a great restaurant called El Centro on 14th Street with a (food and drink) bottomless weekend brunch on Saturday and Sundays from 10:30-3 for $35.

It’s a great Mexican fare and you order, essentially, small plates.  So, you can have a little bite of everything.  The drink menu contains everything from Mimosas to Bloody Marias to seasonal mixes.  What’s ironic?  You HAVE to pay for coffee, tea and juice.  Dang!

As soon you get there they bring you great chips and salsa and come on, guac is a requirement!

I tried some of the ceviche, chicken tacos, beans and eggs.  Others at the table had beef tongue, jicama, chile relleno and more.  Didn’t get pictures of everything.  It was delicious.  Definitely worth checking out.  It was very slow, though.  Sort of ironic with things like ceviche that don’t really cook and the restaurant wasn’t that busy.  But, there was no rush since it was an ugly weather day out there.

Travel = Great Food!

When I was in Oregon it meant I had to eat out.  Darn!  My friends and I explored several places, I only remembered to get pictures at a few.

Day 1:  Dinner at McMenamins – Zeus Cafe.  Quite the variety.  One person has chickpea fries, one went with mussels for appetizers.  For dinner, I had a great thin crust pizza with grilled chicken, arugula, tomatoes and something else…I can’t remember what because it was so good!

Day 2:  Lunch at Yara Lebanese Cuisine.  Any place that makes Baba Ghanouj without dairy to put a ‘lactard’ on cloud nine is unreal (at least in my book).  So, we had a mixed plate/yara platter appetizer then I had a house salad, and friends had kababs.

Dinner at Pok Pok.  Yes, I had to use the bathroom and what did I find when I was in there?  Oh, that they were elected for The James Beard Foundation Awards.  This has happened for many, many years.

Anyway, other cool stuff on this place.  You go put you name in line/on the list.  They give you your buzzer and mention there is a bar across the street where you can wait.  They are connected to these guys so you can tell the other bar what your buzzer number is and they’ll take care of it.  They let you know when your table is ready.  Nicely connected!

When we got our table, jumping ahead a bit, great food!  I tried the Yam Tuna — thai style tuna salad with ginger, garlic, thai chilies, green onions, lemongrass, tomatoes and Oregon (oh, yes, local!) Albacore in spicy lime and fish sauce dressing.  Some of it had some kick!  I can see why this place is well known and recognized.

Day 3:  Lunch in wine country!!!!!!!!!!  Received several recommendations to try Red Hills Market.  People told me it was sort of like a Dean & Deluca on a nice local level.   You walk up to the counter, order and then they bring it to your table.  I enjoyed a nice salami and arugula sandwich and a delicious bean soup.  It was a sort of cloudy day so fit the weather perfectly.

Dinner was based on a recommendation from one of the wineries.  You can never go wrong with Mexican!  So, my friend and I checked out Verde Cocina.  Fresh, delicious, perfect!

For me, the three staples at a mexican restaurant are a margarita, salsa and guacamole.  Check!

Day 4:  Dinner at Petisco.  Little, local restaurant in the neighborhood where I was staying.   I was so thrilled because I was able to have French Onion soup for the first time in ages because they use olive oil (vs butter) in the base and the cheese on top…manchego.  What more could one ask?  Great way to end my trip in Oregon!

And now to English we go.  Was getting together with some long-lost friends the other day and they did the searching for where to meet.  There was rumor of a new French place that just opened its doors a few months back in the 14th street/Logan Circle area of DC so we wanted to check it out.  The name, Le Diplomate.

Tough to get reservations so we took the risk of walking in and got there early enough to not have to wait too long.  Two of us got there before the other tw0 and grabbed a drink at the bar.  My friend had a glass of wine and I had a house cocktail that can be served either straight up or on the rocks.  The Romarin – Absolut, St. Germain, rosemary, and grapefruit.  Very nice and refreshing!

Once we were seated, there were many options on the menu, traditional for French fare.  I will say, while looking it over, I had a great time talking to the waiter in French.  When I can, I’ll do it.  Have to practice.  While looking over the menu, they bring you AMAZING bread.  Baguette, wheat, cranberry-walnut stuff…waiter…another basket.  Dang, so so so good!  Two of my friends opted for raw oysters for appetizers and another for some (french) fries.  I waited for the main course.

Main course-wise, two at the table went for Steak Frites, another went for Lamb Shanks.  For me, because so much french food has dairy,  not having had it for so long, and the lack of ingredients in it, had to go for Steak Tartare.  Also ordered some grilled asparagus.

Overall recap of the evening.  Great place, highly recommend trying it.  I would also recommend aiming for a reservation or getting there early.  It was packed 20 minutes after we arrived (6:15pm).  Also give yourself tons of time.  It took us 15 minutes to get a bottle of wine and water.  Raw oysters took 30 minutes.  Raw…  Main courses took awhile too.  We were so busy talking we didn’t really notice.  On the wine note, we had the Kim Crawford Pinot Noir.  We opted for a well priced option.

But, after dinner we were meeting some others and went across the street.  That’s where we found some wine I’d never tried or heard of.   It’s the Prima from Spain.  Check out their site — I can’t decide the exact name of the bottler/vintner because the names change a bit on the site so I don’t want to say the wrong one.  I just know this is where to visit — bodegasanroman.com.
